Artwork

Main EntranceThis bronze panel with gold leaf created by Alfred Janniot, weighs 10 tons and is 11 feet wide and 18 feet high.  The two figures joining hands represent New York and Paris accompanied by poetry, beauty, and elegance.  The motto of Paris is inscribed: “Fluctuat nec mergiture” (“It floats but never sinks”).

Above Entrance:  Alfred Janniot’s limestone cartouche is approximately 10 feet high and depicts the symbolic figure of Gallic freedom, proclaiming liberty to the world, and holding aloft the flaming torch of freedom.  Below the figure appears the motto of the French Republic: “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” (“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”).

Lobby:  Question Mark (Le Point d’Interrogation) - Silver scale model of the airplane in which the French aviators Costes and Bellonte flew across the Atlantic to New York in 1930 as a return visit of Lindbergh’s historic flight to Paris in 1927.  This model, executed in Paris by Cartier silversmiths, is 28 1/2 inches in overall length, measures 48 inches from wing-tip to wing-tip, and is 10 1/2 inches in height.  It was a gift of the French Government to Rockefeller Center in 1933.
