9 Things to Do With Kids in NYC: A Family-Friendly Guide

Few cities reward photographers the way New York does. Walk a few blocks in almost any direction and you’ll find something worth capturing: a skyline view framed by skyscrapers, a historic landmark glowing at sunset, or a park path that suddenly opens to a perfect city backdrop.

Some places, though, have become iconic for a reason. These are the spots where New York’s scale, history, and energy come together… and where even a quick phone photo somehow looks cinematic.

If you’re looking for the most photo-worthy places in New York City, start with these ten.

1. Top of the Rock

For skyline photos, Top of the Rock is hard to beat. The three-level observation deck sits high above Rockefeller Center and offers one of the most balanced views of Manhattan: Central Park stretching north, the Empire State Building rising to the south, and the rest of the skyline unfolding in every direction.

Photographers love this vantage point because the view feels unmistakably New York. The view is photo-worthy at any time of day, but especially just before sunset, when the light softens over Central Park and the city slowly begins to glow. For an extra memorable shot, add The Beam Experience onto your Top of the Rock ticket, to recreate the iconic Lunch atop a Skyscraper photo while sitting on a steel beam overlooking the city.

2. Brooklyn Bridge

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is practically a New York rite of passage, and also one of the city’s best photo walks.

The bridge’s gothic stone towers and web of suspension cables create dramatic lines that seem designed for the camera. Early morning is the sweet spot, when the light is softer and the crowds are thinner, though sunset brings its own kind of magic as the Manhattan skyline lights up behind the bridge.

3. Central Park

Central Park has a way of making the city feel cinematic.

The park shifts dramatically with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, leafy shade in summer, fiery foliage in fall, and snow-covered bridges in winter. Bethesda Terrace is one of the most photographed corners, where the ornate arcade opens toward the fountain and the lake beyond.

Spend a little time wandering and you’ll quickly discover that the park rewards curiosity. Some of the best shots happen on the paths between the famous landmarks.

4. Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal might be one of the most beautiful interiors in New York.

Step into the main concourse and you’re immediately surrounded by marble floors, glowing chandeliers, and the famous celestial ceiling overhead. Photographers often frame the shot from the balcony above the concourse, capturing the constant movement of commuters below.

The iconic clock atop the information booth is another classic focal point (and one of the most recognizable meeting spots in the city). Fun fact: The iconic four-faced clock is made of opal glass and is valued at roughly $10–$20 million.

5. The High Line

The High Line offers a completely different perspective on Manhattan.

Built on a historic elevated railway, this narrow park winds through the West Side with views that shift every few blocks (from gardens and public art to close-up angles of the surrounding architecture). In some sections, the Hudson River opens up to the west; in others, the park frames the city streets below.

Come in the late afternoon, when the sunlight cuts between buildings and gives the park a warm glow.

6. Bushwick Street Art Collective

For a completely different kind of NYC photo experience, head to Bushwick in Brooklyn.

The neighborhood is home to the Bushwick Collective, an ever-evolving outdoor gallery of large-scale street art created by artists from around the world. Entire warehouse walls are covered in colorful murals, giving the area a raw, creative energy that feels very different from Manhattan’s polished landmarks.

Photographers love the mix of bold artwork, industrial backdrops, and neighborhood grit. It’s one of the most vibrant and creative photo spots in the city.

7. Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park captures the vibrancy of downtown Manhattan.

The white marble Washington Square Arch anchors the park and frames one of the city’s most photogenic views straight up Fifth Avenue. Around it, musicians, street performers, chess players, and NYU students create the kind of street life that makes photos here feel unmistakably New York.

8. Flatiron Building

Few buildings in the city are as instantly recognizable as the Flatiron Building.

Its triangular shape slices between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, creating dramatic lines that look especially striking from street level. Just across the street, Madison Square Park offers one of the best vantage points, where you can frame the building through trees with the energy of the city unfolding around it.

9. SoHo

If you want a classic New York street scene, head to SoHo.

The neighborhood’s cast-iron buildings, fire escapes, cobblestone streets, and wide sidewalks give it a distinctly cinematic feel. Photographers often wander the quieter side streets, where the historic architecture feels almost frozen in time.

Golden hour here can be especially beautiful, when sunlight reflects off the buildings and spills across the cobblestones, but be sure to plan for crowds.

10. Statue of Liberty

Few landmarks symbolize New York (or the United States) quite like the Statue of Liberty.

Rising above the harbor, the statue creates an instantly recognizable silhouette against the skyline. While many visitors take ferries to Liberty Island, one of the easiest photo vantage points is Battery Park, where you can frame Lady Liberty with the harbor stretching behind her.

11. Times Square

Times Square is chaotic, overwhelming, and somehow still completely mesmerizing.

Towering digital billboards, flashing lights, and crowds from around the world create one of the most energetic scenes in the city. Photographers often visit after dark, when the neon glow reflects off the streets and transforms the intersection into a wall of color and movement.

It may be hectic, but that’s part of the appeal. Times Square captures the larger-than-life energy that defines New York.

12. DUMBO

We would be remiss to not mention one of the most Instagrammed spots in the city. Few photo spots in New York have become as instantly recognizable as Washington Street in DUMBO.

People flock to the stretch between Front and Water Streets to capture the famous view: Dumbo’s cobblestone street perfectly framing the Manhattan Bridge as it towers overhead. If you time it right, you might even catch the subway crossing the bridge.

Afterward, explore the rest of the neighborhood. Nearby Brooklyn Bridge Park offers sweeping skyline views, waterfront paths, and Jane’s Carousel, all of which make for incredible photo backdrops.
