Things to Do in NYC with Kids: The 8 Best Family-Friendly Events

April in NYC is a time to celebrate, and it often feels like the whole city is in on it. Crocuses push through the ground, outdoor cafés begin to fill, and the return of warmer weather signals the start of one of the most exciting times of year in New York City.

From music festivals and iconic cultural events to blooming parks and lively outdoor markets, April offers countless ways to enjoy the city. It’s also cherry blossom season, when delicate pink blooms transform parks across Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island.

Whether you’re visiting from out of town or you’re a local New Yorker looking for something new, April is the perfect time to explore. Here’s a look at the best things to do this month.

See Cherry Blossoms Across NYC

All month long

April marks peak cherry blossom season in New York City, when parks across the boroughs erupt in shades of pink and white.

One of the most famous spots to see the blossoms is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where the Cherry Esplanade attracts visitors from around the world. Over in Manhattan, Central Park is dotted with beautiful cherry trees, particularly around the Reservoir and Pilgrim Hill.

The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx also tracks bloom timing with an online guide so visitors can plan their trip for peak blossoms. Meanwhile, Riverside Park’s Cherry Walk and Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park offer quieter places to enjoy the fleeting beauty of spring.

If you're hoping to experience one of the most iconic natural sights in the city, April is the best time to catch the blossoms before they disappear for another year.

Experience the Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue

April 5, 2026

One of the city’s most colorful traditions, the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival takes place along Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th Streets. Participants show off elaborate hats and festive outfits while crowds gather outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral near Rockefeller Center. The event dates back to the 1870s and remains one of the most unique springtime celebrations in NYC.

After admiring the creative bonnets and lively street scene, take the short stroll over to Rockefeller Center.

Celebrate Earth Day

April 22

While city living can sometimes feel removed from nature, life in the concrete jungle reminds us how precious our green spaces really are. Earth Day is a chance to both celebrate the planet and do our part to keep it clean.

One of the biggest celebrations is the 2026 Earth Day Festival, taking place Sunday, April 19, from 12 to 6 p.m. in Union Square. This free public event features environmental exhibits, hands-on workshops, sustainable food vendors, and live performances, including an appearance by environmental educator Hila the Earth.

Taste the City

All month long

If you’re a self-proclaimed foodie (or traveling with one), you’re in luck: Brooklyn’s beloved outdoor food market, Smorgasburg, officially opens in April (exact date TBD). Featuring over 100 local vendors serving diverse, creative cuisine, this open-air food market has earned its title of “the Woodstock of eating,” and is truly one of the best outdoor activities to enjoy during springtime in NYC. The market is open every Saturday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn next to the East River.

If you have a taste for authentic ramen, takoyaki and matcha desserts, Japan Fes is can't-miss. Officially back on March 28, this citywide Japanese food festival brings dozens of vendors and street food favorites to neighborhoods across NYC on multiple dates (including many in April), making it an easy addition to any spring food crawl.

If you find yourself in Manhattan, Rockefeller Center’s dining scene is a destination all its own. From French classics at Le Rock and modern Korean cuisine at NARO, Rockefeller has it all. Whether you’re looking to fuel up between activities or planning a meal as the main event, the Rockefeller Center campus has something for just about every taste and appetite.

Catch a Broadway Show

All month long

Spring is a great time to see a Broadway show, especially as new productions open ahead of the Tony Awards season.

Theatergoers can find world-class performances throughout the Theater District near Times Square, where historic theaters host everything from long-running hits to brand-new premieres. Many shows also announce limited engagements in April, making it an exciting moment for theater fans. Consider stopping by Rockefeller Center for a drink or a bite to eat before or after your show.

Visit the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden

Select dates in April

Every spring, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx hosts its beloved Orchid Show, a dazzling display featuring thousands of colorful orchids arranged in immersive floral installations.

The exhibition transforms the conservatory into a tropical escape and has become one of the city’s most beautiful seasonal art exhibitions. Visitors can also attend evening programs, music nights, and themed events throughout the run of the show. For anyone looking for peaceful outdoor activities during April in NYC, the Orchid Show is well worth the trip.

Attend the New York International Music Festival

April 3-7

Each year, high school and college bands, orchestras, and choirs are invited to audition for a coveted spot at Carnegie Hall for the New York International Music Festival. The six best high school groups and two best university ensembles will make the cut — and all young musicians involved will advance their musical education along the way.

They’ll also create lasting memories for themselves and their families as they take one of NYC’s most legendary stages by storm. Gold, silver, and bronze awards will be granted based on performance level by a panel of expert judges, but really, everyone wins at this festival.

See the Macy’s Flower Show

April 23 - May 10

Each spring, Macy’s Flower Show transforms the flagship Macy’s store on Herald Square into a massive indoor garden filled with elaborate floral installations.

The 2026 theme, Homegrown, celebrates America’s 250th anniversary, expressed through flowers, textiles, and traditional crafts.

Visitors can wander through colorful displays featuring thousands of flowers, themed landscapes, and artistic arrangements designed by professional horticulturists. The free event attracts thousands of visitors each year and remains one of the city’s most beloved seasonal traditions—no tickets required.

Run or Watch the Brooklyn Half Marathon

April 26

Thousands of runners take to the streets for the NYCRUNS Brooklyn Experience Half Marathon, one of the most scenic races in NYC.

The course winds through neighborhoods in Brooklyn, along the waterfront, and past landmarks like the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges before finishing near Prospect Park. Spectators line the route to cheer runners on, making it one of the most energetic spring celebrations in the city.

Even if you’re not running, the race atmosphere—complete with bagels and cheers from fellow New Yorkers—makes it a fun opportunity to explore the borough.

Explore Art Exhibitions at the Met and MoMA

All month long

For art lovers, April is a fantastic time to explore New York City’s world-class museums.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) and MoMA regularly debut new art exhibitions each spring. At MoMA, visitors can see iconic works like Van Gogh’s The Starry Night alongside contemporary pieces.

Pro Tip: Pair your MoMA visit with a trip to the Top of the Rock Observation deck. With this official RockMoMA ticket, you'll save $10 and see the best the Big Apple has to offer.

Meanwhile, The Met offers expansive collections ranging from ancient artifacts to modern art. After exploring the galleries, take a short walk into Central Park and visit the Shakespeare Garden to see spring flowers beginning to bloom—it is Earth month after all.

Film fans can also catch New Directors/New Films from April 8-19, 2026, a festival co-presented by MoMA and Film at Lincoln Center, showcasing emerging filmmakers from around the world. Tickets go on sale mid-March.

For another dose of culture, consider the Rockefeller Center walking tour, a 75-minute, historian-led experience exploring the history, art, and architecture of the Center. You’ll get an insider’s look at the iconic buildings, public art, and outdoor spaces throughout the complex. Family-friendly tours are available on weekends, making it an easy addition to an afternoon in Manhattan.
