The Rockefeller Center Guide on Where to Eat Before or After a Broadway Show
April in NYC is a time to celebrate, and it often feels like the whole city is in on it. Crocuses poke through the ground, and spring awakening brings a tide of events and activities. While there may still be some chilly days, the month of April ushers in better weather and brighter spirits.
It’s the perfect time to embrace all things music, thanks to iNDIEPLAZA at Rockefeller Center, a free and festive celebration that coincides with Record Store Day, and the New York International Music Festival, a five-day event for budding musicians at Carnegie Hall. April also offers a chance to flex your sporty side in the Brooklyn Half Marathon.
In honor of Earth Month, there are plenty of opportunities to help clean, protect, and celebrate our planet, especially on Earth Day. Flower enthusiasts across the boroughs are already on cherry blossom watch, making this the best time of year to visit the city’s parks and botanical gardens. Breathe in the natural beauty and you might even forget, just for a minute, that you’re in the city at all. Read on to see our picks for the top seven things to do in NYC in April.

New York International Music Festival
April 5-9
Each year, high school and college bands, orchestras, and choirs are invited to audition for a coveted spot at Carnegie Hall for the New York International Music Festival. The six best high school groups and two best university ensembles will make the cut — and all young musicians involved will advance their musical educations along the way. They’ll also create lasting memories for themselves and their families as they take one of NYC’s most legendary stages by storm. Gold, silver, and bronze awards will be granted based on performance level by a panel of expert judges, but really, everyone wins at this festival.

Barry Manilow at Radio City Music Hall
April 9-13
Calling all Fanilows: It’s time to flock to Radio City Music Hall. Last April, Barry Manilow set the record for most lifetime performances at the iconic venue before returning for another stint in October. The 81-year-old singer is not finished yet — he’ll kick off show number 49 on April 9 as part of another five-night mini-residency. He’s sure to perform his many chart-topping hits, including “Copacabana (At the Copa),” and “Looks Like We Made It.” The only thing that could make the sound of Manilow’s smooth crooning even better is a romantic pre- or post-show dinner date, so walk right over to Rockefeller Center’s restaurant scene and thank us later.

iNDIEPLAZA at Rockefeller Center
April 12
For the fourth consecutive year, Rockefeller Center and independent record store Rough Trade are teaming up to celebrate Record Store Day by hosting iNDIEPLAZA at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The day-long music festival includes a rocking lineup of artists, crafts, shopping, and food and drink, and all ages are welcome. Start the day shopping for records at Rough Trade from 9 am onward, and expect performances to kick off at noon. Tickets are free and the event is open to the public, but it’s recommended to RSVP in advance; this year’s vendor and entertainment lineup is the biggest one yet.

Marcello Hernández at the Beacon Theatre
April 18
Comedian Marcello Hernández is only 27 years old, but he’s been making audiences laugh on Saturday Night Live since 2022. Hernández even became a season regular this year, in time for “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” — and he’s been called SNL’s “Gen Z secret weapon.” His standup show at the historic, art-deco Beacon Theatre on April 18 is meant for mature audiences and suggested for viewers ages 16 and over. At 5-foot-7, he may be a self-proclaimed “short king,” but Hernández’s voice will be booming to all three of the theater’s tiers thanks to its Sphere Immersive Sound technology.

Earth Day
April 22
While urban living can sometimes feel removed from nature, life in the concrete jungle reminds us how precious our green spaces really are. Earth Day is a chance to both celebrate planet Earth and do our part to keep her clean. From beekeeping at Queens Farm to shopping for sustainable products at the Earth Love Eco Bazaar on the Upper West Side, New Yorkers can give back in a variety of ways this year. And all the eco-friendly fun isn’t limited to just one day: On April 17, the Earth Day Festival will bring environmental non-profits, performances, and workshops to Union Square, and an Earth Day 5K Fun Run kicks off at Randall’s Island Park on April 19.

Brooklyn Half Marathon
April 27
Thousands of runners take to the streets for this beloved Brooklyn race. The NYCRUNS Brooklyn Experience Half Marathon takes participants on a blood-pumping greatest-hits tour of the borough. Starting off in North Brooklyn, runners continue along the waterfront for views of the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges. Then, they soar down the Fulton Street and Flatbush Avenue concourses and carry on toward Grand Army Plaza before ending in Prospect Park. This is not just a day for the runners among us; spectators are just as important and can participate in myriad ways all along the route. Like any good New York activity, the run will end with bagels and schmear.

Cherry Blossom Season
All month long
Though their presence in the city is often fleeting, the advent of cherry blossoms throughout the five boroughs always creates spring fever. Head to Riverside Park’s Cherry Walk, where you can stroll among the fragrant trees planted from 100th to 125th street, or follow this map of Central Park to see where flowers can be found. Across the river, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Cherry Esplanade is on “cherry watch,” with regular bloom updates to help plan your visit and tours available to learn about the season’s highlights.
In the Bronx, avid fans can track trees’ flowering status using the New York Botanical Garden’s bloom trackers. In Queens, Flushing Meadows Corona Park will be in bloom near the Unisphere, and Queens Botanical Garden boasts its own Cherry Circle. Not to be outdone, Staten Island’s Silver Lake Park and Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanic Garden have bright blooms to admire as well. At Snug Harbor, visitors can also experience the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, one of only two authentic outdoor Chinese gardens in the United States.
