Your Guide to Rockefeller Center Holiday Experiences

Whether it’s your first time in the Big Apple or you’re a New Yorker seeking new seasonal traditions, the city offers endless ways for kids to explore, learn, and be amazed—from iconic ice skating rinks and kid-friendly museums to neighborhood light shows and hands-on holiday experiences.

This year, Rockefeller Center and the surrounding area are packed with family-friendly activities, but the magic spreads across the boroughs, from the Central Park carousel to Brooklyn’s immersive Lightscape displays. Grab your stroller, layer up, and get ready to uncover the best fun things for the whole family in NYC this December.

1. The 2025 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Through January 10

A must-see for any NYC December visit, the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has delighted families since 1931. Its thousands of twinkling lights sparkle, creating a magical setting for family photos. Toddlers, school-age kids, and even teens marvel at this seasonal centerpiece.

You can view the tree for free, or make your visit extra special with the Top of the Rock Tree Viewing Experience. Until January 10, every Top of the Rock ticket includes access to a dedicated, close-up Tree Viewing area at the base of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree—no separate ticket needed. Arrive 15 minutes early at the 50th Street entrance to enjoy the festive, kid-friendly space, snap photos, and take in every sparkling detail before heading up to the Observation Decks for sweeping city views of Central Park, the Hudson River, and Manhattan’s skyline.

2. The Rink at Rockefeller Center Presented by Chase Freedom

Through April 2026

Glide beneath the Christmas Tree on one of NYC’s most scenic skating rinks. Its intimate, festive setting makes it a memorable stop for families. This kid-friendly experience is ideal for families whose little ones can already skate or are learning. Sessions last 60 minutes—just the right amount of time for young skaters before they’re ready to head in for a well-earned hot chocolate break!

3. Hershey’s Chocolate World Times Square

Ongoing through December

A short walk from Rockefeller Center is Times Square’s Hershey’s Chocolate World, a three-story chocolate wonderland. Kids can create custom candy bars, explore interactive displays, and sample festive treats. Holiday decorations and seasonal products make this a must-see stop for families exploring the city.

4. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Ongoing, December

A great pick for creative kids and teens, MoMA offers six floors of colorful, imaginative, and world-famous art. Families can explore everything from bold sculptures to interactive exhibits, plus kid-friendly favorites like Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. Stroller-friendly spaces and on-site cafés make it easy for families to take breaks and wander at their own pace.

For extra value, opt for the RockMoMA Ticket, which includes general admission to MoMA and a visit to Top of the Rock. Start the day with skyline views from the observation deck, then head to MoMA to explore galleries, hands-on spaces, and ever-changing exhibitions—all while saving on both experiences.

5. Central Park Carousel & Zoo

Daily, December

Central Park is packed with fun things for families. Take a spin on the historic carousel, then visit the Central Park Zoo to meet penguins, sea lions, and other animals beloved by kids of all ages. Wide open-air paths are perfect for stroller walks and family photos, making this an essential stop on a family trip through Manhattan.

6. Staten Island Ferry to the Statue of Liberty & Battery Park

Daily, Free

A must-see for NYC visitors, the Staten Island Ferry offers free, stroller-friendly rides with breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, the East River, and the Manhattan skyline. Once on Staten Island, explore Battery Park or snap family photos with the harbor as a backdrop.

Nearby, the Bronx Zoo also offers kid-friendly winter exhibits. Both attractions provide hands-on, immersive experiences that entertain little ones and older children alike.

Families can stroll at their own pace, sip seasonal hot chocolate, and take in creative displays that make NYC’s holiday season so unique.

Planning a Family-Friendly December in NYC
